My Evolution as a Writer this Semester (Blog #10)

I've grown a lot as a writer this year. I've found that the best way to improve as a writer is to practice, and the three major essays were good practice. Coming into college, I was confident in my essay-writing abilities, but I improved significantly. Each essay pushed me out of my comfort zone in different ways. The audio memoir pushed me to read and record my essay aloud, which I've never done before. Additionally, I have written memoirs before, but it has been a long time, and it's the longest memoir I've ever written. For the literary analysis essay, it's the first time I've written about a piece of media that I enjoy so thoroughly. How to Train Your Dragon is my favorite childhood movie, so I was excited to be writing about it. Looking at it critically and writing about it academically was a challenge but fun for sure. This lesson also translated well into the argumentative research paper. I love The Last of Us, so writing about it made the paper engaging to write. The process of writing it, with multiple due dates, forced me to confront my procrastination. I still procrastinated a bit on each part, but having multiple smaller goals made the whole process less stressful. It made me consider putting smaller deadlines on myself for other essays/assignments. Overall, this semester made me a better writer by challenging me and serving as good practice. I also found that writing came a lot easier than in years past. I frequently found myself enjoying writing, which is rare. If I ever have to write in future classes with any level of freedom, I will be sure to write about something I have a genuine passion for.

  1. Love to hear this, Casey. I really think you should consider submitting your essay to LxL.
